Dr. Taewoo Lee Awarded NSF Grant for "Optimal performance incentives for organ transplantation centers.”

The Department of Industrial Engineering would like to congratulate Dr. Taewoo Lee for his recent National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. The grant supports his collaboration with Rice University and Houston Methodist Transplant Center; NSF has awarded $386,251 to the project, titled “Optimal performance incentives for organ transplantation centers.” Organ transplantation is the most effective, and often the only viable, therapy for end-stage organ failure, Unfortunately, the demand for organs greatly exceeds the supply. To ensure that transplant centers are effectively using these scarce organs, Dr. Taewoo Lee will develop a new transplant center evaluation system that incentivizes transplant centers to improve their post-transplant outcomes and maximize transplantation volume. Dr. Lee will develop various stochastic optimization models and simulation models to examine the interplay between societal goals and healthcare provider incentives and its impact on the trade-offs between nationwide transplantation volume and outcomes.
