: It seems that only yesterday I was sitting in the Engineering Auditorium listening to speakers in my own seminar class. As a student in my final semesters of engineering, I thought I had the world figured out and working in industry would be a piece of cake. Little did I know that a handy 6-point font cheat sheet wouldn’t be much use out on a manufacturing floor when deadlines were passed.
Moving from the classroom to the field is a big adjustment. Not only do you have to get used to the steel toes and hard hats, but you also have to learn to take textbook problems and shape them to fit everyday problems. As Industrial Engineers, the solution isn’t often solved with a mathematical equation or a few lines of code. Most times, the solution can only be found by working together with everyone around you, from the maintenance workers to the CEOs. During this discussion, I will speak about how I learned to mold the lessons taught in school into the world of industry and continue to learn each day.
Ms. Lilliane Habib graduated from the department of Industrial Engineering, University of Houston in 2019. After her time at UH, she had the privilege to work for Schlumberger in their Global Rotational Development Program where she worked in four different positions in two locations over two years. These positions focused in manufacturing engineering, quality, management, materials and supply chain. During these two years, she earned her Six Sigma Green Belt Certification. She now works for the government at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. In the meantime, Lilliane is also pursuing a Master Degree in Analytics from Georgia Tech.
